Nich is a host and producer with a ten-year background in television, comedy and video games. He’s that guy from that thing you saw late one night on one of those digital channels, but your kid thinks he’s hilarious. He is also a part of the Back Pocket crew!
What’s the first game you ever remember playing?
First game I remember playing is Alex Kidd in Miracle World, which was a built-in game for the Sega Master System. It was Sega’s attempt at making a mascot game, and in the ranking of Mario, Sonic and Alex Kidd, Mr Kidd is certainly dead last in the eyes of gamers. But in my heart, he will always be number one.
What is your favourite game currently?
My favourite game of all time is either Dark Souls or The Outer Wilds. My favourite game I’m playing right now is Neon White, which is a first-person, speed-running platform card-based shooter anime dating sim thing that sounds ridiculous and is but is also brilliant and everyone should check it out.
What’s been one of your biggest or most exciting achievements at Back Pocket?
Simply launching it was the biggest thing. We didn’t want to do it unless we “did it right” – we really wanted to nail the idea of a studio-based variety show on Twitch, and I think we have. Every week is a new exciting show/format. I even start every episode by saying “I think this will be our best show yet” and I’m usually right.
Oh, I also like when we forced Gus to lick my foot. That was cool too.
Who in the video game industry inspires you?
Anyone who can ship a game. Particularly solo devs. Those one-person studios that have just taken full control of the medium are always incredible to see, and it’s really inspirational that one person can make something so complex/intricate/difficult as a video game.
In terms of actual developers, Lucas Pope (Papers Please, Return of the Obra Dinn) and Sam Barlow (Her Story, Telling Lies) both do such incredible work with narrative and storytelling in games that I play whatever they put out no questions asked.
What are your other hobbies?
I’m a big sports fan. Premier League, NFL, NBA, F1, MLB, NHL – if it’s a sport played in another country other than Australia I’m there, awake at 2AM, watching. Even to the point that I have fantasy teams in half of those sports, and so get FAR more invested than is healthy.
Why is supporting cancer research important to you?
There are so many incredible things in the world – we’ve developed so much technology, so many huge leaps forward as a species that it’s incredible to me that cancer is still something that ravages the lives of millions.
I lost my stepmother to cancer a few years ago, and seeing first-hand how much it debilitates and destroys a person and the family around them is one of the most heartbreaking things to witness. No one deserves to live through that.
I’m really proud to be a part of Cure Cancer to raise both awareness and money, and I can’t wait for the day that the breakthroughs come where none of us needs to worry about this anymore, and this website is just a historical relic of a time before cancer was an inconvenience rather than a disaster.
